On the occasion of its 74th anniversary, the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) presented the 2008 "Sirak Sktinik" awards for media excellence.
The awards were bestowed during an official ceremony at the "Bulgaria" concert hall. They are named after the respected Bulgarian painter, poet and playwright, Panayot Todorov, known by his artistic pseudonym "Sirak Skitnik" (Orphan Wanderer). Panaytov was appointed as the first Director of the Bulgarian State Radio, upon its establishment on January 25, 1935 by a decree of Tsar Boris III.
The Media Program South East Europe of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) received the special award for their commitment "to improve the qualification of journalists" and for "advancement of broadcast in Bulgaria".
The BNR General Director of BNR asked KAS to support the training department of the radio in the areas of journalists' education and management. The task was accomplished in cooperation with the SEE Media Program's partner - the Media Development Center in Sofia.
The event was broadcasts live on two national and six regional BNR frequencies. The Bulgarian television also aired reports about the event, which was attended by State officials and over 1000 distinguished guests.
Awards were also bestowed for outstanding journalism, excellence in radio-programs and technical improvements.
The celebration included a concert of the BNR symphonic orchestra.
