The possibility that an eventual reactivation of Units 3 and 4 of the Bulgarian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) "Kozloduy" could pose dangers to Serbia has been the topic of an article published Saturday in the Serbian "Politika" daily.

In the article, Serbian nuclear experts express controversial opinions - some believe that the Bulgarian NPP is in no way dangerous to Serbia or anyone else, while others are more skeptical and advise Serbian authorities to prepare an action plan in case of an accident.

Such plan does not exist in Serbia, the experts warn. The Act, allowing the establishment of a State Agency to prepare a nuclear disaster action plan is sitting in the Serbian Parliament, waiting to be approved, the Serbian media reminds.

An expert from the Vinca Nuclear Institute near Belgrade is quoted as saying that Serbia should not be afraid of the reactivation of "Kozloduy", adding that he would not worry even if all 17 NPPs in a 400-kilometer radius from Serbia would reopen.

The expert reminds that the Thermal Power Plant (TPP) "Nikola Tesla" near Belgrade is way more harmful to the environment with its highly elevated levels of acid waste. The scientist points out that a much greater danger could come from an accident in a TPP or a Hydraulic Thermal Plant because an eventual crack in their walls could cause the death of tens of thousands of people in a matter of several minutes.

"Kozloduy has top notch experts, all educated abroad - in Western Europe or Russia," the article concludes.
