Who are the most successful Bulgarian politicians of 2009 – the year when Bulgaria elected new MEPs, a new National Parliament, a new Sofia Mayor, and a new government was inaugurated?

Bokova, a career diplomat, launched her campaign for the UNESCO Director-General post from her positions as Bulgaria's Ambassador to Paris and UNESCO. In September, she triumphed in the toughest UNESCO race ever after winning against the Egyptian candidate in the fourth runoff at the UNESCO Council. Bokova has thus become the first woman and the first Eastern European to chair one of UN's key institutions.

Borisov led his party GERB to a staggering win in the July Parliamentary elections, defeating the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party. He formed the new government, backed by rightist allies, which quickly moved to cut the budget deficit, investigate the former cabinet, and to restore EU funding for Bulgaria. In September-October, Borisov's public support reached unprecedented levels. His party GERB also won the EP Elections in June and the Sofia Mayor Elections in November.

 
 22.6 % of votes

By popular opinion Kuneva has been regarded as one of the most successful EU Commissioners, and her consumer protection measures have been acclaimed. In the June 2009 EP Elections, Kuneva ran for MEP attracting an unexpectedly high number of votes for her party NMSP even though she later chose to remain a EU Commissioner. Even though she was not nominated for a second term by PM Borisov, Kuneva is completing successfully the first team of a Bulgarian EU Commissioner.
